SCANNING ELECTRON MICROSCOPE (SEM) ANALYSES

The samples should not be damp and should be clean; in addition, they should be suitable for cutting with or without water and should not splinter during cutting or bottom trimming.

Samples that require working under low vacuum conditions are not accepted.

Before sending samples that have high porosity such as zeolite, the laboratory should be informed as suchlike samples will be kept under vacuum at least one day.

Preparation of microfossil samples is the responsibility of the entity that requests the analysis.

The samples should be chosen to represent the area it has been taken and/or the target study the best.

The Samples should have “Sample Tags” fulfilled by the entity that request the Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) Analysis. Each tag should contain sample mark, sample type and necessary information for the requested analysis. The sample mark in the tag should be stated in the Analysis/Test Application Form.

The same sample mark should not be used for different samples. Otherwise, the samples will not be processed.

In case of multiple analyses/tests for one sample, sample size should be increased depending on the analysis type and number.

The samples should be sent in a clean, transparent nylon bag or a resistant cloth bag.

EDS Mapping Study with Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM)

Semi-quantitative EDS analysis is performed on polished

sample (in the mold) or Semi-quantitative EDS analysis is performed on a ed area over a polished open-top thin section. Elemental mapping data of the ed area and analysis result are given in CD medium.

NOTE: The area to be analyzed is ed by the customer. Mapping period is at least 2 hours. The period needs to be increased to determine element dispersions in low concentration in the mapping area.  Study period is determined during the application.

Service fee for preparation of mold-polishing sample or open-top thin section and carbon coating for the samples that are sent unprepared are additionally charged.

Contacting with related Unit via Sample Acceptance Unit and getting an appointment is necessary before the application. Service period of analysis is determined as per the time schedule prepared following acceptance of the application and this period is notified to the customer.
