The seafloor sediment distributions and history, oceanographic processes, paleoseismology, environmental studies, and such are revealed using data obtained from definitions, measurements, and laboratory analyses (sedimentological, paleontological, mineralogical, geochemical, and so on) performed on surface and core samples taken from the seabed.
